 Governance and Peacebuilding Overview (PDF)

Conflict Dynamics’ Governance and Peacebuilding portfolio is located within the Peacebuilding in Transition States program and focuses on the political accommodation – or mutual conciliation around competing political views and interests – as a key component of peacemaking and peacebuilding. Conflict Dynamics has developed a typology of six focal areas for political accommodation which is being used to explore technical options for governance in transition States. This work is being undertaken in a number of contexts, including the Republic of the Sudan, South Sudan and Somalia.

Conflict Dynamics has identified the following objectives for the Governance and Peacebuilding portfolio:

  1. To explore and generate technical options for political accommodation in the Republic of the Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia, and other contexts;
  2. To develop overall frameworks and indicators on governance structures, political accommodation, and peacebuilding in transitioning states;
  3. To ‘feed in’ these technical options and tools to local and international stakeholders;
  4. To facilitate a limited by targeted dialogue on political accommodation with key interlocutors.

The primary deliverables/products developed under this project are technical inputs and options pertaining to political accommodation for the focus states, as well as the development of macro-level frameworks to assess political accommodation and its relation to governance and peacebuilding.

Several briefing papers have been produced under this initiative to date:
